”Casa Pacis was everything we could have hoped for. First of all, the place was perfect for our fifth anniversary, and very romantic. The home is literally a few yards from the ocean. On our hike around the property and along the shore we saw whales, seals, osprey, a fox hares, and more. The Casa was equipped with everything we needed, including a luxurious hot tube and a great gas grill. We awoke to beautiful views of the ocean, read on the porch, and cooked wonderful meals. Klaus made it all possible with wonderfully documented directions and instructions. We would love to visit Casa Pacis again.”

Our Response: “This guest rated "location" with only 4 stars. In our advertising we emphasize: "Cozy, charming 2BR/2BA cottage with spectacular ocean views in superbly private meadow and dunes setting just 150 yards from “Walk-on-Beach.” If anything, this is an understatement of a location description. They also rated our pricing ($261.43/night) with 3 stars only. At the onset, they were unhappy that we limit occupancy to two people, and we bent over backwards -- accomplishing a change of booking dates by a different party -- to accommodate a change request for their rental dates. One can rarely, if at all, find a vacation rental cottage in a prime location similar to ours for less than twice our pricing. The overwhelming majority of our guests comes with a sense of appreciation for this opportunity to vacation in a pristine nature setting like we offer, soaking in the expansive ocean vistas and sounds, away from suburbia in utmost peacefulness and privacy, at affordable pricing.”

”A very restful location. Deer were there through out each day. The view of the ocean was awesome. The majority of the time we felt like we were the only other people at Sea Ranch. Great access to long hikes on the bluff trail. The home was quite comfortable, I especially enjoyed reading the book, "The Sea Ranch...Diary of an Idea. Sea Ranch is the only place I have found on the West Coast that actually feels like you are living in a private nature preserve, and Casa Pacis is a great place to allow nature to overtake you!”

”A super friendly, reasonable, helpful and responsive host, one cannot imagine a better experience. The location is superb - gorgeous unobstructed views of the sea, wildlife comes close to the house , especially deer and many birds. A 2 minute walk to the Bluff trail that takes one along the sea shore, yet the location is very private. The house comes with access to all Sea Ranch Association amenities - swimming pools, sauna, yoga classes etc. The house is very comfortable and felt like home. There was everything we needed. The kitchen was functional and well equipped. Everything was in a good working condition. The bed was comfortable. Internet was fast and reliable and allowed remote work without hiccups. The backup battery saved the day as a major storm caused a power outage, and we were able to ride it out. We will definitely return.”

Beautiful area with breathtaking scenery. Great places to hike and trails everywhere. Bring food with you or be prepared to go to the grocery store often. A lot of restaurants are closed during the beginning of the week, even in the other closest towns. Check before you go. Bring spices and things with you as the house has no food condiments or seasonings. When I go again, I will plan the food part of my trip better. Otherwise a nice stay and very relaxing.”
Our response: We provide paper and cleaning products, and some teas usually coffee. Since seasonings are so much a matter of individual taste and need to be fresh, we mostly rely on our guests to bring their own favorite spices. There are also two supermarkets in Gualala, just 2.5 miles north of Casa Pacis. Following the pandemic, it has become exceedingly difficult for restaurants to retain qualified personnel, and we all are looking forward to getting back to some more "normal" situation. We keep a section in our dedicated website, where we include recommendations about local restaurants.

”We had a perfect week at Sea Ranch in Casa Pacis. I have purchased several books on Sea Ranch and am doing my research. I have always been a big admirer of Lawrence Halprin and his wife Anna (a dancer), so it has been thrilling to see how Halprin envisioned the landscape of Sea Ranch. It is truly remarkable here, the way they designed the commons to extend the proprietary space of each homeowner. Your house in particular feels like it has a huge front yard that extends to the sea, and in fact it does!! I also love the location because we are so close to beach access. We’ve been exploring the bluff trail and it is truly a wonder. I don’t think there is anything quite like it anywhere! ”

”I can’t imagine a better location for our first visit to Sea Ranch. To sit in the living room or on the wrap around deck and see and hear the ocean so close is unforgettable, and so peaceful. The home is steps away from the bluff trail leading straight down to the beach. With 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, and a fully stocked kitchen the home offered all mod cons and all creature comforts. We got groceries at Surf Market in Gualala on day 1 and from there we didn’t eat out except our one visit to the lodge for dinner on day 3. One of the best things about this home was the decor…a relaxing combo of 70s/80s Danish modern and California hippie chic. Reminded me of when I lived in California in times past and how simpler life used to be. And yet, the WiFi was fast and perfect! And Klaus’ communication and instructions were so helpful. I honestly can’t imagine a better home to stay in for a Sea Ranch visit and will look no further than Casa Pacis next time. Thank you Klaus and Gundi for sharing your family home with us!”

The location is super, easy access to trails going both north and south. 2 min walk to Walk on Beach and 10-15 to reach Shell Beach and the harbor seals with their pups. The house, bed, and furniture were comfortable. One side of the living room is basically an entire wall of view- the peaceful meadow with the ocean in the distance and the horizon. Feels very private with no cars or people in view. We watched many types of birds fly by and also enjoyed two visits of the bobcat who strolled about the meadow grass. Communication was quick and thorough. The house is simply outfitted, but has everything you need for a comfortable stay.”

“Our stay was nice. Peace is a good name for the house. The spa was so great. I slipped in on our second night. The great trail to the cathedral [referring to the Sea Ranch Chapel] was a fun adventure and access to the lovely beach was a frequent visit. I did notice a couple things. The lid on the coffee pot was broken and would fall off when pouring water into reservoir. The MB sliding door is really really hard to open and close. I did miss a small finger hold on the LR screen slider. A mouse did visit our first night and gave a good try at getting into our crackers☺️In the kitchen.”
Our Comment: Indeed, we make it clear in our pre-arrival communication that, where Casa Pacis and other Sea Ranch homes are located, wildlife such as raccoons live side by side with us human "intruders." They love to get inside the houses and enjoy foods left in the open, and they then happily retreat back to their habitat -- and the only way to prevent this from happening is to diligently keep food out of sight and the doors closed at night. Meanwhile, the housekeepers found no traces of mice ...
We try to keep the house in perfect shape, as is corroborated by our average star-rating of 4.8 stars in over 126 (!) reviews. But then, a sliding door can get out of track and is then a bit harder to move than normal ...
At Casa Pacis ("House of Peace") our valued guests cannot only abundantly observe peaceful wildlife, such as deer, rabbits, or even cute raccoon families -- as these guests experienced -- but we can all but guarantee that they will notice whale spouts from the comfort of the living room, bedroom, or the view swing seat in the loft.
Most importantly, we are delighted that these guests, as did countless others, enjoyed their stay.

There's lots of books to enjoy and I particularly loved reading through the collection of American short stories. Please do make sure to take time to read through the rules. There's a handy binder the host leaves for you so you can reference what to do (or not do!) during your stay. Looking forward to hopefully returning to this place one day.”
Our Comment: Indeed, the Sea Ranch "Rules" -- albeit easy to follow -- have become quite important. In an effort to minimize the impact of Short Term Rentals on the resident Sea Ranch community, the Association has imposed a strict set of rules that became effective on 1/1/2019. They apply to all rental homes and limit occupancy, sound and light intrusion onto other properties, and prohibit smoking, flying drones, trespassing, and speeding. They require extensive signage.

For the price I would have expected soap and shampoo be provided (it’s my understanding they they generally are, but weren’t this time around). Small black bugs in the bathroom and I had to clean when I arrived. Heaters could be updated to a quieter, more modern system. The guest books and instructions were written with a tone that seemed to assume the worst of visitors - in a scolding / negative tone - which didn’t make me feel as welcome as other rentals I have stayed in. Communication with Klaus and Gundi was excellent, as was beach views and overall location. Excellent hot tub.”

Our Response: While we did have bottles with hand lotion in both bathrooms, our courtesy supply of shampoo was indeed depleted. The guest did not realize that a big part of the “price” was the refundable security deposit. The few “small black bugs” are harmless "sow bugs" that, unfortunately, come with the territory — all Sea Ranch meadow homes have them in the rainy season. The scolding/negative tone is not our doing but a new HOA requirement for all short term rentals at Sea Ranch. Indeed, a new heat pump based heating system has been purchased and will soon be installed. It will also provide A/C during the few hot days in late summer when the prevailing winds do not
provide enough "natural" air conditioning from the ocean.

We drove up from the bay area on a Thursday evening and found the house without trouble at about 1030pm. As we drove, it dawned on us that we could kick off our trip with a bottle of nice wine in the hot tub when we arrived. Alas, by the time we'd put this together it was late enough and we were far enough out that there were no longer any shops open. We of course still dipped our toes into the hot tub and found it a pleasant 96 degrees to the evening's 60. The waves crashed in the distance and we quickly relaxed to the point of deciding to crawl into bed. Our first day began with a trip to the Gualala Supermarket, just a few minutes north on Highway 1. This pleasant little shop surpassed our expectations with their selection which consisted of a lovely array of mid shelf wines, spirits, mixers and even some sakes! To back it up we found a sizable collection of produce, your normal staples (breads, milk, eggs, OJ, & so on), a well stocked butcher (flank steak, ribeyes and a sizable pork and fish selection!) and a delightful staff all too happy to help. It was a refreshing step away from the buzz of the city. We visited the beach after lunch. It was just a short walk down the street, which quickly turned to loose gravel and then sand beneath our feet as we approached. As you crest the final burm the beach stretches out before you with tide pools to the south and a small ridge with stairs going up it to the north. On the way we crossed a series of trails which would become the high point of our second day. For dinner we uncovered the propane grill in the garage, wheeled it out and enjoyed some flank steaks and spaghetti before hanging out in the loft and watching the fog roll in. For our second day we packed a lunch and journeyed north on the trails for four miles to the Gualala River. The coastal trail is full of little plaques, each sharing an interesting tidbit about the history of the immediate area. At the end of our four miles was Gualala Point Regional Park where we were educated about barbed wire and the size of whales after circling the point and staring at the adorable town of Gualala across the river. We cleaned up, following a delightfully simple checklist left by Klaus and left on the morning of our third day. All in all, Casa Pacis was a delightful romantic get away for me and my partner. We're looking forward to visiting again, perhaps in the winter so that we can watch a storm roll ashore from the warmth of the loft's love seat swing."

Indeed, this is an interesting perspective from a renter coming from NYC and unfamiliar with the area. The Sea Ranch is known as a “gated” community with 2300 lots, 3/4 developed. Lesser known is the fact that these homes are, often arranged in small clusters, on 3500 (!) acres with large commons areas in-between. The architecture is by now world-renowned and emphasizes "building light on the land," unobtrusive, blending into the environment. Strict design rules (fencing only to shield vehicles from view but not to mark lot boundaries, all-underground utilities, no roof antennas, no street lighting) foster a sense of tranquility and absence from suburbia. While there are no “real” gates, the internal road system is private and HOA-maintained, with very little traffic. Casa Pacis is in a desirable, prime ocean view location near the largest sand dunes and driftwood-laden sand beach of Sea Ranch.

We cooked every meal (to music thanks to the bluetooth set up), hot tubbed with ocean views and walked the bluff paths for hours. Mama deer and her doe were right at the windows as were bounding jack rabbits and countless species of birds and flowers. We even saw a pod of whales at Gualala Point - the blow holes were spouting just like fire works. Magic! Everything was comfortable at Casa Pacis and we'd happily return. ”

Sitting out under the stars in the tub was incredible. It is so close to the ocean too ... Less than 5 mins walk! "A remote beautiful location. The drive up from SFO was pretty wild (lots of twists and turns and fog), but worth the trip. I thought the central coast of CA was beautiful, this area is rugged and...well...wild. Every night we sat out on the back deck at dusk and listen to the ocean and watch the deer wander around in the meadow...and the stars. Amazing. The property itself is well kept up, tidy, with all the amenities you need. We hung out at the house and also explored the area. Took a trip over the mountain to Philo, explored Gualala, and took a morning to check out the light house at Point Arena. When we were there it was pretty foggy, except for our last day. Nonetheless, it was a relaxing trip for my wife and I and our two toddlers."

"Serene Casa Pacis sits by itself near the end of a cul-de-sac above Walk On Beach. The only sounds you might hear are the ocean and the warbling of the birds. This was our second visit to Casa, and reinforced our experience of last year that this is truly the "House of Peace". The Casa is a superb romantic getaway. After a day of hiking on the bluff or among the towering redwoods, we would soak in the very private hot tub, enjoy the sunset from the swing in the loft, and a glass of champagne by a toasty fire in the wood-burning fireplace. (The owner provides lots of wood -- a nice touch.) The Casa is well furnished, equipped and maintained so that we had no surprises during our visit. The owner is very knowledgeable and easy to contact, so details of our rental were easy to arrange. Our security deposit was returned promptly. "
