FAQ — Bella Vista and Casa Pacis
Raccoons and Field Mice
RACCOONS
are cute and quite intelligent little rascals that like to get into the house by pushing screen doors open or breaking through them — HIDE foods from view and keep glass doors closed !!!! They will even open the sliding glass door if it is not actually locked¨
Indeed, this is not a joke; and this is not confined to "Casa Pacis" and "Bella Vista." We have been told that the occurrence of raccoons making their way into the house is prevalent all over Sea Ranch and beyond, up and down the coast. We became believers when it recently happened to us. We had left our bedroom sliding glass door about a foot open. Some crackling sounds woke us up, and we just saw the tail of a raccoon disappearing over the railing of the deck. The screen door was about 6" opened. We had definitely left it closed — but not locked — when we went to sleep. We found everything in good order, except that a plastic bag with vitamin C tablets was torn up and emptied — the poor creature probably got quite a stomach ache from eating the contents ...
Raccoons are notoriously clean and clever, and they are harmless. Our locksmith/screen maker confirmed that locking the screen door will not prevent a visit by raccoons — they will then tear up the screen, rather than politely slide it open ...

FIELD MICE
are super-abundant and come with the territory. We are not kidding: the house is meticulously sealed to the point that field mice find ZERO entry points …
… EXCEPT if you leave a door, window, or screen door open, even if only by a 1/4-inch gap; we will then all but guarantee that a mouse will visit over night and delight on your food crums … 😉.
